Art and Design

Intent

At Park Primary School, art is valued as an essential part of children’s personal and creative development. Through art, pupils are encouraged to express their individuality, develop confidence and independence, and build aspiration. Our curriculum nurtures creativity, curiosity and a sense of wonder, while helping children to reflect on their ideas and the world around them.

We aim to develop pupils’ skills in drawing, painting and sculpture, alongside a secure understanding of key visual elements such as colour, tone, shade, line, texture, pattern, shape and form. Children explore a wide range of artistic styles and media and study diverse artists, craft makers and designers from different cultures and periods in history. This enables pupils to appreciate both their own cultural heritage and that of others. Our inclusive curriculum is designed to ensure every child can achieve their full potential.

Implementation

Art and Design is taught in line with the EYFS Statutory Framework and the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2, supported by the Access Art framework. In EYFS, learning is embedded within Expressive Arts and Design, while in KS1 and KS2 teaching is skills-based and progressive.

Pupils are given regular opportunities to explore and develop practical skills through drawing, painting and sculpture using a range of materials. They study the work of artists and designers, learning to recognise similarities and differences between styles and techniques and applying this knowledge to their own work. Sketchbooks are used throughout the school to record observations, develop ideas, and review and reflect on learning.

Skills and knowledge are carefully sequenced to ensure clear progression and to prepare pupils for the next stage of their education. Children are encouraged to discuss their work and articulate their understanding using appropriate vocabulary.

Impact

Assessment in Art is ongoing and informs future teaching to ensure appropriate challenge and support. Progress is monitored termly to identify strengths and gaps. In EYFS, assessment is linked to Expressive Arts and Design, with outcomes reported to parents at the end of Reception. By the time pupils leave Park Primary, they have developed strong creative skills, confidence in using a range of techniques and the ability to reflect on and discuss their artistic learning.
