Computing

Intent

At Park Primary School, our Computing curriculum aims to ensure all pupils become confident, creative and independent users of technology. We want children to be able to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information effectively, while developing the skills needed to use digital technology in a safe, responsible and purposeful way.

Our curriculum enables pupils to understand and apply the core principles of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation. Pupils learn to analyse problems computationally and gain regular, practical experience of writing and debugging programs to solve them. By building secure knowledge and revisiting key concepts, children know more, remember more and understand more, leaving primary school digitally literate and well prepared for the next stage of education.

As technology plays a vital role in modern life, we also aim to educate pupils to use technology positively and responsibly. Online safety is embedded throughout the curriculum to prepare pupils for life in an increasingly digital society.

Implementation

Computing is taught from EYFS to Year 6 using the Purple Mash scheme of work, which provides a progressive, engaging and well-structured curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum. The scheme supports teachers of all confidence levels, alongside ongoing professional development led by the subject leader where needed.

Teaching ensures clear progression across the three strands of computing: computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Pupils have access to appropriate hardware and software, including laptops, tablets and programmable equipment. Computing skills are reinforced through cross-curricular opportunities, with online safety promoted through lessons, displays and communication with parents.

Assessment is ongoing and informed by observations, discussion, pupil voice and work produced on Purple Mash.

Impact

Pupils enjoy computing and understand both how and why technology is used. From EYFS to Key Stage 2, children develop increasing independence and confidence in using technology to create, organise and present digital content. Progress is monitored through pupil voice, work scrutiny and staff feedback, ensuring high-quality teaching for all pupils. All children, including vulnerable groups, access the full curriculum with appropriate support. By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident, responsible digital citizens ready for future learning.
