RE

Intent

At Park Primary School, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum aims to develop religiously literate, respectful and curious learners who are well prepared for life in modern Britain. We believe RE plays an important role in helping children understand themselves, others and the diverse world around them, while fostering a strong sense of belonging within our local Doncaster community.

Following the Doncaster Agreed Syllabus Believing and Belonging, our curriculum is carefully sequenced through six broad thematic learning pathways. These pathways ensure progression of knowledge and understanding as pupils move through the school.

Our RE curriculum encourages children to explore the ‘big questions’ about life, meaning and purpose. It supports pupils in developing their own values, spirituality and personal worldviews, helping them to understand their place in a multi-faith and diverse society. Pupils are also given opportunities to learn about religions and worldviews through encounters with people and places connected to faith.

Our overall aim is to develop positive, active citizens who value diversity and show respect, empathy and integrity.

Implementation

RE is taught through six thematic learning pathways, ensuring knowledge is built progressively from Foundation Stage to Year 6. Lessons are engaging and challenging, enabling pupils to ask thoughtful questions and explore key ideas in depth. Pupils learn about Christianity alongside Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and non-religious worldviews, reflecting the diversity of the UK.

Children enhance their learning through visits to the local church and visits from faith leaders. Regular Open the Book assemblies, delivered by the local church, support pupils’ understanding of Bible stories and encourage curiosity and discussion.

Multi-faith celebrations are explored through lessons and assemblies. Our Equity and Diversity Ambassadors further promote inclusion, equality and respect, celebrating the cultural communities within our school.

Impact

By the end of each key stage, pupils will have developed a secure understanding of religious beliefs, practices and values. They will be able to discuss key vocabulary, beliefs and ‘big questions’ confidently, while showing respect for others and valuing diversity. Monitoring through discussion, observations and book scrutiny ensures high-quality teaching and learning in RE.
